Hollywood knows how to build hype for a new project. From movies to TV shows to award shows, City of Angels has a way of marketing itself for months. The same goes for restaurants. A new chicken sandwich restaurant, which is coming to the Phoenix metro area via Los Angeles, has been in the works for months now, and information about the highly anticipated restaurant is continuously leaking during this time. Finally, after being announced earlier in the year, the popular chicken restaurant has opened.

Dave’s Hot Chicken started out as a small chicken stand offering spicy chicken sandwiches on Hollywood backlots. The booth, which was little more than a grill, a few foldable chairs and a small tent, caught the eye of a number of celebrities, including legendary actor Samuel L. Jackson. Thanks to investments from Mr. Jackson and several other high-profile players, Dave’s Hot Chicken was able to move into a physical location in Los Angeles. Eventually, much like the flavor packed into the spiced sandwiches, word caught fire from the chicken restaurant and the old stand spread to multiple brick-and-mortar locations in Southern California. And now the California chain has officially moved to Arizona, with a big opening for Gilbert.

The restaurant, open Sunday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to midnight, focuses specifically on chicken. Customers hungry for a burger or other meat options better head elsewhere. In fact, the menu itself is about as small and contained as it gets for a quick, casual joint. Combo meal options include 2 Tenders with fries, 2 Sliders with fries, 1 Tender/1 Slider with fries and 1 Slider with fries. That’s it. Of course, there are other side options, such as cheese fries, mac and cheese, and kale salad.

What sets the restaurant apart is the variety of spice options that customers can order. There’s the No Spice heat level, which lets customers enjoy the Nashville-style fried chicken sandwich (or chicken tenders) without the spicy kick. Going up there is the Lite Mild, followed by Mild, then Medium. For those who want to get into the meat of the spice levels, there’s the Hot, Extra Hot, and Reaper. And, to help cool the burning taste buds, chocolate, strawberry and vanilla milkshakes are available.
