Good old ‘Spoons’ is back with more menu bangers than ever before. That’s right, the ever-popular pub chain favorite of daytime drinkers and after-work partiers has added 14 items to their menus across the country.

Tuesday’s Steak Club and Thursday’s Curry Club are back with new dishes, but the everyday menu has also received new additions in the form of lots of chicken. And I mean a lot. Of chicken.

There are four new boneless chicken dishes on the menu, so as a self-proclaimed KFC junkie and Wetherspoons food fan, I had to try them all. And I was more than a little surprised at my findings.

Basket of Chicken Breast Bites

These bites were absolute perfection

These little nuggets of deliciousness were everything I wanted in a piece of chicken. They were an attractive golden color that immediately made my mouth water and the visibly crispy edges screamed “eat me, eat me” in an Alice in Wonderland temptation. The bites didn’t disappoint when I ate one either; the batter was crispier than the chips and the chicken itself was lightly but perfectly seasoned with salt and pepper, letting the juiciness of the meat speak for itself. The whole thing was enhanced by the sticky soy sauce that came with it and which I would have gladly eaten on my own.

Basket of southern fried chicken strips

These chicken strips were extremely crispy

Those bands of southern friends might as well have been fried in Kentucky – Colonel Sanders would have been proud. The coating was so crispy my chew could have been heard from Kentucky and it was so intensely spiced that it briefly rid me of my cold. The spicy mayonnaise pairs perfectly with the succulent chicken to create a meal tastier than anything I’ve had at Wetherspoons before.

Basket of Quorn ‘no chicken’ nuggets

Vegans, rejoice over these nuggets

I’ve had a lot of bad Quorn in my life but luckily this was one of the good ones. If done incorrectly, Quorn tends to get sour and crumbly, but this was as close to perfect as it gets without real meat. It was juicy and Wetherspoons clearly found some crunchy coatings, but those nuggets could have done with a lot more salt as the sweet chilli dip didn’t add much seasoning.

Boneless basket

This basket gives you a nice little mix of chicken

This basket is a mix of chicken strips and chicken breast bites and would be the perfect sharing plate for a couple disagreeing about the optimal form of chicken. But the BBQ sauce that came with it was disappointing – it mostly tasted like sugar and only took away the flavor of the chicken.

Total rating: 3/5

The verdict

I would recommend any chicken – or non-chicken – on the new Spoons menu without hesitation. I lean towards brisket bites purely because of that delicious soy sauce, but the chicken strips and Quorn would satisfy any KFC lover.
