The package clearly states that it is “exclusively for use in the KFC system”.

However, eagle-eyed fans were horrified after discovering that the main ingredient used in the New Zealand branch is monosodium glutamate, also known as MSG.

The other list of ingredients used are “Herbs and spices, salt and garlic powder”.

MSG is not used in chicken in the UK, but UK branch recipes use 11 herbs and spices.

According to Healthline, MSG is a flavoring additive that was considered a toxic ingredient in the 1960s.

However, recent evidence has dispelled this myth and instead suggests that MSG is safe when consumed in moderate amounts.

The woman who shared the initial photo wrote, “It’s like salt on crack.”

It wasn’t long before other social media users took to the comments section to give their take on the discovery – and the responses were mixed.

“I’m sure MSG was never banned, and all the myths surrounding it (being) bad for you have been dispelled,” one wrote.

A second commented: “Yuck no wonder I still feel sick afterwards.”

KFC has confirmed on its website that it uses MSG in certain countries.

“Some of our foods contain MSG, but rest assured it is only present at levels safe for the general population.”

“It is a recognized flavor enhancer that is also found naturally in foods such as meat, fish, milk, vegetables, fruit and cheese.”

A KFC spokesperson told Fabulous: “The 11 herbs and spices in our finger licking chicken are a closely guarded secret – but we will let you know that MSG is not one of them in the UK. “
