Israeli food tech start-up SuperMeat opened a test kitchen in Tel Aviv to showcase its cultured chicken burgers. The Chicken offers diners the option of eating meat grown directly from chicken cells, in what SuperMeat claims to be the world’s first such consuming experience.

According to the company, select customers can sit at the bar to watch the chefs in action, while the dining room tables overlook the modern pilot plant where customers can observe the production process. The menu consists of three courses and the main course options both feature crispy cultured chicken fillet (see image below), served in a brioche bun.

The race to get clean meat to the table already involves a surprising number of contenders. Israel21 said in June that thirty cultured meat startups, including five Israeli ones, have sprung up in the past seven years. Last month we reported that the EU is funding a Meat4All consortium research program to the tune of € 2.7 million, demonstrating its commitment to cultured meat to solve some of the problems our food systems have created.

Interestingly, in 2018, the venture capital arm of poultry giant Tyson Foods co-led a $ 2.2 million funding round in Jerusalem-based cultured meat food technology, Future Meat Technologies. .

SuperMeat’s product is still in the development stage and while not yet commercial, the test kitchen has been transformed to deliver what it calls a full cultured meat restaurant experience. SuperMeat says it believes in the need for transparency and to that end it showcases the entire process from cell to burger chicken meat.

Fast Company reports that the food has yet to receive regulatory approval, as governments are still developing frameworks to address the new category of cultured meat (in the United States, the USDA and the FDA are working together on how to regulate products). However, SuperMeat is able to serve the meat for feedback while still in the development stage. Within one to two years, she hopes to get into the restaurant business. In five years, he plans to start factories on a commercial scale and hopes to reach cost parity with traditional meat soon after.
