San Diego-born burger chain Jack in the Box has set its sights on New Orleans, the company announced this week, with the goal of bringing 50 restaurants to the New Orleans area over the next coming years.

Jack in the Box is currently looking for franchisees throughout Louisiana, New Orleans, Lafayette, Alexandria, etc. virtually anywhere along the I-10 corridor, the company says (the chain has owned restaurants in Baton Rouge for about two decades and in Gonzales more recently). The restaurant, which was founded in the 1950s, is probably best known for its burgers, but also for its tacos, and has since expanded to seemingly random menu items like chicken fajita pitas, teriyaki bowls, tiny tacos, mini churros and chocolate cake.

It’ll be at least a year before Jack in the Boxes makes its debut in New Orleans, but until then they’ll have a new fast food contest in town: In May, the city granted final approval for the first standalone Chick-fil-A. restaurants in Orleans Parish, one on Tulane and South Carrollton Avenues, one downtown on Poydras Street and Loyola Avenue, and one on the West Bank. Mid City’s location has been particularly controversial, primarily due to traffic issues, but unsurprisingly the Sidney Torres IV-backed development has been approved by City Council and the Planning Commission and is under construction, with l aim to open by the end of 2022. .

The company’s franchisee recruitment manager told the Lawyer of the expansion that he wants to go to areas “where people have the highest propensity to go to a Jack in the Box”. We’ll see if that’s the case with New Orleans, but maybe leave those chicken sandwiches off local menus – this is Popeyes country, after all.
