Two chefs from the Peninsula have teamed up to offer fast and casual dining at Hillsdale Mall in San Mateo, a mall they have frequented for years.

Chef-partners Jeremy Cheng and Randy Magpantay, both graduates of California Culinary Academy, finally threw a grand opening for their Winner Winner Hot Chicken – a restaurant they launched in March but then had to downsize to due to the pandemic. They turned to feeding first responders and offering limited take-out.

Highlights of the full menu now include the Nashville-style Hot Chicken, made with air-cooled, antibiotic-free chicken (available by the piece, as offerings, in sandwiches and salads); a vegan Barry’s Bowl inspired by Barry’s Bootcamp; a rotating menu of homemade desserts; as well as bay area beers and California wines.

“We take our heat levels seriously,” the chefs say on the website. Customers can order medium, spicy and extra-spicy, “or hot as a glutton,” as they call it. There is of course also a classic version, without heat.

Cheng’s dining experience includes Town in San Carlos, Milagros in Redwood City, and Nola in Palo Alto; Magpantay cooked for Chef Fitness and William Jay Catering, both based in San Mateo, and King’s Sandwich Co. in South San Francisco.

Gagnant Gagnant, located on the terrace of the shopping center, is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
